  • What’s considered a heavy vehicle?

Under Australian law, a heavy vehicle is a vehicle with 4.5 tones of gross vehicle mass or aggregate trailer mass. The gross mass is the heaviest a vehicle is allowed to weigh when it’s been fully loaded, as per the manufacturer’s specifications. This is the standard set by the Heavy Vehicle National Law.

Some examples are semi trucks, freight trucks, buses, vehicle carriers, tractors, mobile cranes, livestock vehicles, agricultural vehicles and road trains.

  • How often are heavy vehicle inspections required?

Any heavy vehicles that use the public roads have to comply with the standards laid out by Heavy Vehicle National Law. There is an annual inspection required that looks at the vehicles point by point to determine their road safety and performance.

We use the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual (NHVIM) to guide our road safety inspections. After the inspection, we can issue roadworthy certificates and other safety certificates.

  • Are mechanics at BDM Heavy Vehicle Repairs qualified?

We have a staff of 4 qualified diesel mechanics and 2 apprentices. Our staff are all trained and qualified mechanics with years of experience working on a variety of heavy vehicles.

Our mechanics also work rotations on the mobile emergency breakdown team. Even when you need emergency service, you’re going to get a qualified diesel mechanic from our workshop to work on your vehicles.

  • Do you clear defect notices?

Yes. We can bring your heavy vehicle up to roadworthy standards and clear defect notices. Our defect clearance service is available to anyone, even if you didn’t get the vehicle inspected with us initially.

Once your vehicles are re-inspected and meet the national standard, we can issue your roadworthy certificate to get you back on the road.

  • Do you offer fleet services?

Yes, we offer regular fleet servicing to those in our local area. We can do fleet maintenance, repairs and inspections for heavy vehicle fleets of all sizes. Let us help you keep your fleet in good working order with regular preventative maintenance and repairs.

For fleet services, we can travel to your location and perform the necessary service there. No need to bring your vehicles to our workshop. Our mobile repair unit will come to your location and work from there.

  • Which brands are you affiliated with?

We operate as an authorised customer service centre for Mack, UD, Volvo and WABCO. If your heavy vehicles are from one of these brands or operate with tech developed by one of these brands, we are the place to go for service.

In our workshop, we use Castrol oil engine fluids and ACDelco batteries. We believe in the quality of these brands and trust them in every vehicle we service or repair.
